A Husband and Wife's Experience at Zuccotti Park
Driving from Boston to NY, we really had no idea what to expect when we got to Liberty Square. We had been watching the various live streams of the myriad of cities, but nothing compares to actually being in the shadow of Wall Street with the occupiers. We walked in with a huge cardboard box full of t-shirts and immediately people surrounded us, curious as to what they were all about. “Wow, these shirts are great. How much do you want for them?” Well, they’re free, we would reply. “Who are you guys?” would be asked next, and we'd tell them “We’re just a husband and wife from the Boston area that wanted to help. We made the design with some of the ideas from our twitter comrades and had them printed.” When everyone realized we had paid for these out of our own pockets, the most beautiful thing happened—the generosity that ensued after hearing our story was truly inconceivable. Introductions were made, followed by high fives, handshakes, and the sincerest of gratitude. Many of the people offered to donate anything they had, from a dollar to even some $20’s to help us. People from all walks of life, including a couple wall street bankers, showed their support for us. One particular man had told us that he felt very fortunate to have a job, on wall street no less, and wanted to help. While it didn’t come close to covering the cost of our shirts, it didn’t matter at all. We weren’t expecting anything. The response was beautiful and so were the hundreds of people with whom we had personally met. 99.9% of everyone there, including the police officers, were respectful and peaceful. The sense of solidarity and the overall good intentions at Liberty Square was something we’ll always remember. We feel incredibly fortunate that we were able to experience a movement that will hopefully bring about real change in America and throughout the world.
We can't wait to do this again! Please send us your designs or ideas for new designs, so we can get started on the next batch. We are hoping to donate these to new Occupy cities next. Any donations are much appreciated and will help make this a reality!
Much love and respect to everyone.
